Zomba United are on the verge of merging with Complex Madrid, the old capital city’s non-leaguers who recently beat Silver Strikers in the Presidential Cup.

United general secretary Wanangwa Jere on Wednesday confirmed the merger while Madrid chairperson Noel Gobede insisted that the deal is yet to be concluded.

“In the interest of developing Zomba football, we decided that it would not be good for two teams from the same area to be competing in the lower league. As for the logistics on who will be the coach and others, we will come back to you. There is no financial transaction involved so far,” he said.

It will be a matter of reunion for most Madrid players who Jere claimed used to play for United who were relegated from the TNM Super League last season.

In an interview on Wednesday, Gobede said further details about the merger would emerge today Thursday.

The merger come a month after United lost their sponsorship from Zomba City Council. It was around the same time that Madrid beat Silver 2-1 before Silver were readmitted into the cup through a boardroom decision after successfully lodging a complaint that the non-leaguers featured an ineligible player.
